John Louis Smith, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at Select Specialty Hospital at Mon Health System in Morgantown.
Born on September 30, 1940, in Gulfport, Miss., he was the son to the late Eugene and Nettye Wilkinson Smith.
John’s life was one of dedication to his family, his country, and his community. His devotion was evident in his loving marriage to Winabeth Allen Smith, with whom he built a rich tapestry of memories cherished by all who knew them. The proud father of sons, David Smith (Lynne) and Brian Smith; John instilled in his children the values of loyalty, perseverance, and compassion.
John served his country honorably in the US Navy, reflecting his unwavering bravery and patriotism.
Known for his courage, John approached life’s challenges with resilience and strength, setting an inspiring example for all. His absence will leave a void in the hearts of those who loved him, yet his spirit remains a comforting presence.
In accordance with John’s wishes, McCulla Funeral Home will be providing cremation services.
Friends may gather at McCulla Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, October 20. His remains will find their final resting place at the West Virginia National Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Monday, October 20, where full military honors will be conferred.
