UPDATE: I-68 to partially open

A tractor-trailer accident closed I-68 in both directions Friday.

West Virginia Division of Highways confirmed that one lane in either direction will open at about 3 p.m.

The rig wrecked shortly before 6 a.m. near the 18.5 mile marker. Emergency crews confirmed that an unknown chemical, now identified as phosphoric acid, was leaking from the vehicle.

Preston County emergency crews and West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection are managing the spill and its cleanup. The acid entered a nearby tributary, which has been dammed and contained.

I-68 will be closed during cleanup efforts, according to a North Central WV Emergency Incidents social media post. Traffic will be detoured on Old Route 73.
