MORGANTOWN — A man turned himself in to the police after a Monongalia County murder in 2024 was sentenced last week.
Arnold Johnson III, 21, of Montgomery Village, Md. was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the murder of Rashad Malik Alton of Morgantown in July 2024, according to a Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office press release.
On July 11, deputies were dispatched to a shooting on Mountain Valley Drive. When arriving on scene, they located a male victim with a gunshot wound. He was transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries.
During investigations, detectives identified the shooter as Johnson and issued a warrant for him on first-degree murder.
On Aug. 7, 2024, Johnson turned himself in to the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office without incident and was being held at North Central Regional jail.
“Our community saw a relatively quiet week, and that’s always a good thing,” said Sheriff Todd Forbes. “We’re proud of the dedication and work our detectives did to ensure a positive outcome on the senseless murder of Rashad Alton.”
As of Monday, Johnson is still lodged at North Central Regional Jail.
