INWOOD – Brody Kehler had himself quite an opening night.
So did the University High defense, which all led to the Hawks’ 40-21 victory against Musselman on Friday night.
Kehler, the Hawks’ sophomore running back, finished with five touchdowns. One of them came via a pick-six interception return, while the other four were rushing scores.
“Big night for Brody,” UHS head coach Eric Snyder said. “He got us going early.”
The UHS defense did the rest, forcing six turnovers from the Applemen (0-1). The Hawks (1-0) had five interceptions, with linebacker Marcos Kniska grabbing two of them. Kaleil Lewis also recovered a fumble.
“We came out with a 14-0 lead and our defense definitely did a good job of making a statement,” Snyder said. “When you look at the three phases of the game, I think we still have a lot to improve on, but the defense really made some good in-game adjustments and were able to get some things fixed pretty quickly.”
UHS quarterback Harrison Helbig surpassed 200 yards passing and also added a TD run.
“Harrison was pretty solid,” Snyder said. “He was efficient and made a lot of nice reads. He kept our offense in gear for the most part. He did a fine job.”
UHS hosts Parkersburg South next Friday for its home opener.
