KOA campground open, ice pavilion on deck at Mylan Park

MORGANTOWN — This is it.

Go time.

Months of hard work and meticulous preparation have brought us to this weekend.

The anticipation has reached a fever pitch and it’s finally time to put the results of all that effort on display.

Excited travelers from near and far are packing up to make their way to Morgantown.

It’s time to put up, or shut up.

It’s time to throw open the gates of the KOA Holiday Campground at Mylan Park … and there’s also a football game.

“We’ve been running around here pretty crazy, but we’re excited,” Mylan Park KOA General Manager Frank Witt said. “We opened a small part of our campground back in May, but this weekend we’re opening up the rest of it and giving more access to those coming camping and RVing for the Labor Day weekend and to enjoy, of course, a great Mountaineer game.”

This weekend, the 37-acre campground will expand its offerings from 41 RV sites to 137 RV sites, 22 cabins featuring three different sizes and layouts, and 10 tent camp pads. The campground also includes a playground and “Kangaroo jumper” for kids and two dog parks.

“We also have a great walking trail that connects our area with Fitness Way (leading to ballfields, Pro Performance, an inclusive playground, track and aquatic center). We also have some fishing ponds out that way – catch and release,” Witt said, explaining access to much of the 400 acre park is included for KOA guests.

“Mylan Park has a one-park pass. When you stay with us, we give out two passes to the folks who come in their RVs or to stay in cabins or tents, and they get to use the facilities at Mylan Park. If you want to go to the fitness center, play pickleball, shoot basketball, go swim at the aquatic center, it’s all included within your registration fee.”

And there’s more coming.

Later this fall, the campground’s central lodge will open. The lodge will serve as a meeting area and activity center complete with a camp store, laundry and shower facilities, communal fire pits and a propane filling station.

Guests will have access to some temporary facilities on site and in other park buildings until the lodge is complete.

But the campground isn’t the only excitement coming to Mylan Park in the immediate future.

New paint and letters went down this week at the Ice Pavilion at Mylan Park.

About 1,000 feet from the KOA entrance sits the Ice Pavilion at Mylan Park, a 48,000 square-foot ice rink facility with a regulation NHL ice surface.

The building opens Tuesday. An official grand opening celebration is being planned for Sept. 8.

The ice arena features seating for 1,200 spectators and team locker rooms and training facilities making it a destination for regional tournaments, school programs and special events.

The Mylan Park website highlights programming initiatives including regular public skate sessions, learn-to-skate and learn-to-play (hockey) programs, curling and ice sports education.
