MORGANTOWN – The 2025 fall sports season is off and running swiftly, and multiple sports and schools got underway this week on the court, pitch, and field.

Girls Soccer

Morgantown: The Morgantown girls’ soccer team got off to a blazing start in 2025 with a 7-1 victory on the road against Weir on Wednesday. Senior forward Ella Miller tallied five goals in the contest to lead the Mohigans (1-0) to a season-opening win. MHS will host Lincoln on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.

Preston: The Preston girls’ soccer team began its 2025 season on Friday evening at Berkeley Springs. The score will be updated in the digital version of this article on dominionpost.com.

Boys Soccer

Morgantown: Morgantown opened the 2025 campaign with a 4-2 victory on the road against Buckhannon-Upshur on Wednesday. Senior forward Ray Hanif led the Mohigans with two goals. Senior Kaiden Lafferty tallied a goal while junior Anthony Vessecchia scored one and assisted on two others. MHS will travel to visit defending Class AAA state champion Beckley on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

University: University High fell to visiting Parkersburg South 2-0 on Thursday evening to open its 2025 season and will travel to Musselman on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.

Preston: The Preston boys soccer team began its 2025 season on Friday evening at Berkeley Springs. The score will be updated in the digital version of this article on dominionpost.com.

Volleyball

Morgantown: MHS kicked off its 2025 calendar with a pair of wins in a tri-match with Shady Spring and Independence on Thursday evening. The Mohigans swept both the Tigers 2-0 (25-22, 25-20) and the Patriots 2-0 (25-12, 25-13). Sophomore setter Riley Brennan led MHS with 38 assists. Senior Paige Brink (14) and sophomore Leah Greeny (15) combined for 29 kills in the two matches. Junior libero Audrey Tompkins had 23 digs.

University: University begins its season Saturday morning in Winfield with a quad-match hosted by the Generals that includes Madonna and John Marshall.

Clay-Battelle: Clay-Battelle opened the season with a pair of wins over Buckhannon-Upshur (2-1) and Fairmont Senior (2-1) in a tri-match hosted by the Polar Bears on Thursday evening. The Cee-Bees will travel to North Marion on Monday at 7:00 p.m.

Preston: The Knights dropped their opening match of the 2025 season 3-0 to Keyser on Thursday night in Kingwood, and will return home on Saturday to host a tri-match, welcoming Washington and Brooke.
