MORGANTOWN – Many players around the state enjoyed breakout seasons and made a name for themselves in 2024.
One of the top returning breakout stars of the 2024 season is University High School junior Hayden George, who made a significant impact on both sides of the ball for the Hawks last season as a sophomore as a wide receiver and a part of the UHS secondary.
After a successful 2024, George was more motivated than ever to get to work in the offseason to become bigger, faster, and stronger.
“I was able to do all three of those things,” George said after listing his goals for the summer. “I gained 15 pounds and have gotten faster at the same time. We have some new things in our offensive schemes that Coach Lawless has drawn up for us, and I just can’t wait to be back on the field with my teammates.”
George was the leading receiver for University last season with 38 catches for 625 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging an outstanding 16.4 yards per reception. He was the safe hand for the Hawks through the air, making catches of all types. Deep throws, one-handed grabs, screen passes with yards-after-catch; George was a do-it-all wideout for UHS in 2024.
“I honestly just want to continue to be a sure-handed receiver and focus on gaining yards after a catch,” he said. “I always have the goal of making it at least ten yards after I catch the ball. I think that’s something that can go a long way.”
George earned all-state Honorable Mention honors last year for Class AAAA. He could very well see his name on the all-state list at the end of the 2025 campaign, especially since the Hawks should have more stability at the quarterback position after a slew of injuries last year.
“We have two guys who I really trust, and I love both of them,” George said. “They both work so hard and love the challenge. I trust them with anything, and it helps just knowing that either of them has what it takes to get any of our receivers in the endzone.”
As mentioned, George also plays defensive back for the Hawks and is a significant part of the defense.
“For now, I plan to continue playing corner, but we will see where that goes as the season progresses,” he said. “My main goals for the year are to just build on last season. I would love to reach 1,000 yards and ten touchdowns on offense, and five interceptions on defense, but as long as we are winning games, I will be happy; stats don’t matter to me whatsoever.”
George and UHS will begin the 2025 campaign on Friday, August 29, on a road trip to the Eastern Panhandle to visit Musselman High School. UHS will play its home-opener in Week 2, hosting Parkersburg South on September 5 at 7:00 p.m.
