MORGANTOWN — West Virginia was still searching for some key pieces to round out the 2025 basketball roster and the coaching staff made some serious strides there by adding Amir Jenkins.
Jenkins, who was originally a 2026 prospect at Worcester Academy in Massachusetts, elected to reclassify to the current cycle giving the Mountaineers a major addition at this junction of the off-season.
A four-star prospect, Jenkins picked the Mountaineers over scholarship offers from Maryland, Xavier, Creighton, Mississippi State, Virginia Tech, Georgia, Wake Forest, Arizona State, Boston College, South Florida, East Carolina, George Washington and many others showcasing his potential.
Considering the options available on the market this was quite a coup for West Virginia.
West Virginia got involved with Jenkins in early June when head coach Ross Hodge extended a scholarship and things only built between the two from that point forward. That led to an official visit at the end of June and his subsequent commitment to the Mountaineers a few days later.
Jenkins’ decision to reclassify gives West Virginia a true point guard option for next season behind North Texas transfer Jasper Floyd and provides the Mountaineers with some options at the position. The appeal to play this season at the college level was one that Jenkins didn’t want to pass up.
“I chose West Virginia because it felt like home. I like Coach Ross. Great person and I think I’m ready to play in college, and so does he, and lastly to get better,” Jenkins said.
The Mountaineers now have a total of 13 players on the roster for the 2025-26 season and while space is now limited to just two potential additions the bulk of what the coaches are working with should be in place.
Jenkins, rated as the No. 99 prospect by Rivals in the 2026 class, possesses great length and is a crafty ball handler that can collapse a defense with his ability to get to his spots.
The point guard is the fourth high school addition for West Virginia since Hodge took over joining guard Jayden Forsythe, forward Deandre Thomas and guard M.J. Feenane.
