ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Morgantown High alum Maddox Bowers looking forward to sophomore season in Glenville after an opportunistic freshman year

MORGANTOWN – Every freshman searches for an opportunity.

That was the case for former Morgantown High School quarterback Maddox Bowers last fall as he stepped onto the campus and gridiron at Glenville State University.

His opportunity came in a slightly different way than the typical quarterback taking his first snaps under center, as Bowers was asked to play another crucial role on the team: holder.

“I got the opportunity to be the holder and appear in every game this season,” Bowers said. “I played in some pretty big moments throughout the year, holding the go-ahead field goal against Fairmont. Also, another big moment against West Virginia State, so it was just cool to get to experience all that in my first season after not expecting to see the field that early on.”

Now, entering his sophomore season, Bowers is listed as the second-string quarterback on the depth chart and knows he must stay ready for whatever happens.

“I’m working every day to get better physically and mentally to stay sharp in case my number gets called,” he said. “As a backup, you’re always one play away from potentially having to go out there and lead your team and perform as the team needs you to perform. It’s all about staying ready. Even as a backup, I’m preparing myself as though I am the starter so I can always be ready.”

The Pioneers will have some extra excitement added to their season, as a brand new athletic complex is being built beside the football field.

“We finished second in the conference last season and still thought we underachieved,” Bowers said. “The investment in the facilities and adding resources to the university, you can really tell that the players and staff are investing in building a winning culture. I think all of these resources that are being allocated show that there is an investment in trying to build a program.”

Bowers also enjoys his time outside of football at GSU, where he is a member of the FCA and other clubs around campus.

“I love the small-town feel of the campus and the surrounding area in Glenville,” he said. “We are there for football and education and nothing else. I really enjoy being around my teammates and coaches, there’s just a strong community feel around there, and it makes it feel like a true second home to me.”

The Pioneers will begin their 2025 campaign on August 30 against Emory & Henry University. The time and location will be determined.
