University High punter Jimmy Gregg commits to Syracuse University

MORGANTOWN – University High School rising senior Jimmy Gregg announced his commitment to Syracuse University Monday via his social media.

According to 247sports.com, Gregg is the top-ranked recruit at the punter position in the class of 2026 in the entire country.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder averaged 42.7 yards per punt in 2024 with UHS. He pinned 21 punts inside the 20 and earned honorable mention all-state honors in Class AAAA.

“This is truly a blessing,” Gregg said. “Not a lot of people get this opportunity, and I’m just thankful for the chance I’ve been given to do what I love at the next level.”

Ultimately, Gregg decided on Syracuse after holding scholarship offers from Marshall, North Carolina State, Purdue, Syracuse, and West Virginia.

“Overall, Syracuse was the best program and school for me,” Gregg said. “Coach Fran (Brown) is a special head coach, and with others on staff like Coach (Ricky) Brumfield, Coach (William) Coale, and Coach (Emmanuel) Marc, I know that I will be able to thrive to my full potential with the program.”

Gregg, only a junior in 2024, will still have another season to play for the Hawks. He says having his commitment decided is a burden lifted off his shoulders.

“Being committed my senior year is a huge weight off of me,” he said. “I had the goal to become the top punter in the country and got comfortable there. It just makes my senior year a little easier knowing that my recruitment is finished.”

One thing Gregg knows is that now that he has chosen where he will head to play football at the Division-I level, the work is just getting started.

“My goals now are to continue to punt and perform to maintain my spot,” Gregg said. “Also, to keep improving at practice or in anything I do this year. We’ve got a great team this year and I know that If I can do anything to help push the team to where we want to be, that my job will be complete.”

Gregg and the Hawks will begin their 2025 campaign traveling to Musselman on August 29.
