Morgantown Post 2 opens summer with 20 runs in first two games

MORGANTOWN – The Morgantown Post 2 baseball team has enjoyed a fast start to its 2025 summer schedule with wins over Parkersburg and Clarksburg, scoring nine runs on Saturday and following with 11 runs on Wednesday.

Morgantown (2-0) has 22 hits in scoring those 20 runs, and in the latest victory over Clarksburg, 11-0 in a mercy-shortened contest, six batters tallied a knock for Post 2.

First-year head coach Jacob Goodnight’s club has indeed shown its offensive ability, but not to be overlooked is the defensive effort, with only two runs allowed through 12 innings of baseball so far.

“So coming into the season, I wasn’t sure what to expect,” Goodnight said. “This is the first year in a while that our roster seems to be an even split of MHS and UHS players, along with our college guys who returned this summer. Our local teams had some notable success this year, with MHS advancing to the state championship game and UHS finishing the season strong.”

The Post 2 roster tells a similar story to that of the rosters of both MHS and UHS, as the two programs have seen senior-heavy teams with impactful classes graduating in consecutive seasons in recent years.

This season, we saw both teams benefit from the positive impacts of the younger class of players. In the state championship game against Hurricane, MHS started three freshmen and a sophomore.

Post 2 sees a similar change in its roster, missing players that were staples on the team for the last few seasons, and now welcoming the next class of players to wear the black, white, and blue.

“We know these kids are coachable and winners, and we want to play full-tilt team baseball,” Goodnight said. “If we have to bunt someone over, everyone is happy to do that. Be ready to play defense for your pitcher. Do what you have to do to help the team win.”

Mason Chaney got the win on the mound for Post 2 on Wednesday over Clarksburg. The West Liberty Hilltopper tossed four innings with only two hits and one walk allowed, while striking out seven batters.

OVAC 5A Player of the Year and recent UHS graduate, Brance McCune, led the Post 2 offense, going 2 of 3 with a double and a pair of RBI.

Eight of the nine Post 2 starters touch home plate to score at least one run on Wednesday.

Post 2 will host Napoleon, Oh. on Thursday evening at Dale Miller Field before traveling to Potomac State this weekend.
