Shirley Jean Dean Hamilton, 74, of Morgantown, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 23, 2025, with her family by her side.
Born on February 24, 1951, in Sutton, Shirley spent most of her life in Morgantown, where she and her beloved husband, Joel “Nathan” Hamilton, made a home filled with love, laughter and memories.
Shirley and Nathan shared 40 wonderful years of marriage and together raised four children: Terica Tinney and Sean Varner, Becky and Chad Brock, Christopher and Kassy Hamilton and Zachory and Tiffany Hamilton.
Shirley was a proud and loving grandma to nine grandchildren: Joshua, Briana, Shanan, Zoey, Peyton, Zayden, Cole, Zander and Keira. She lit up at the mention of their names and found immense joy in watching them grow up and spoiling them in her own little ways.
Known for her strong work ethic, Shirley worked her entire life, most notably at Pizza Hut and Valley Mart, where she was widely known as the best cook around. She brought warmth and kindness to every person she met, greeting friends and strangers alike with a smile that could light up any room.
A true family matriarch, Shirley had a gift for bringing people together. She loved taking weekend trips down to Braxton County to spend quality time with her brothers and sisters: Gerald and Janice Dean, Janet and Kurt Riffle, Sharon Tinney and Larry, Barb and Bob Fletcher and Johnny and Trish Dean. She cherished every visit with her aunt Lovie and countless cousins, nieces and nephews, far too many to name, but all held dearly in her heart.
She always had the right words to comfort those around her. She found peace in the simple joys of life-growing plants and vegetables on her porch garden. She loved spoiling and spending quiet, cozy time with her beloved cats: Oscar (the grouch), Archy (the curious sweetheart) and Smokey (the wild man). Shirley was proudly a “Trump Girl” to the fullest. She and Nathan shared many evenings watching Fox News together and enjoyed talking politics, something she genuinely looked forward to.
Though she didn’t belong to a specific church, Shirley loved attending services with her sisters and was recently baptized, a moment that brought her great peace. Her faith in Jesus was sincere and strong.
Shirley will be laid to rest surrounded by love, joining her beloved parents, Ora Mae and Franklin C. Dean. Her legacy of love, strength, and joy lives on in every life she touched.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Service for Shirley will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 28, at Stockert Funeral Home, 378 Flatwoods Corner Road, Flatwoods. Visitation will be two hours before the service from 11 to 1 p.m. Final resting place will be in the Tichenel Cemetery, Heaters.
Stockert Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Shirley Hamilton.
