Blaine A. “Sonny” Chess, 85, of Morgantown, passed away on Friday, May 16, 2025, at The Sistersville Center after a prolonged struggle with dementia.
He was born on June 13, 1939, in West Alexander, Pennsylvania, to the late Blaine W. Chess and Ruby Main Chess.
Blaine, or “Sonny” as he was affectionately known, was a man of simple pleasures and strong convictions. He was a 1958 graduate of West Alexander High School and dedicated 22 years of his life to West Virginia University, working at the WVU Dairy Farm before retiring in 1996. His commitment and hard work were evident in everything he did.
An active member of the University Church of Christ, Blaine’s faith was a cornerstone of his life. His illness eventually prevented him from attending services, but his spirit remained unwavering. Blaine was also a passionate fan of WVU athletics and Pittsburgh Pirates baseball, finding joy and excitement in the games and the community they fostered.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Karen McCoy Chess; three brothers: Jonas, Donald and John; in addition to his twin sister, Elaine Chess Moore.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Sharen Jean McCoy of Morgantown; as well as several nieces, nephews and a wide circle of friends whom Blaine cherished as family. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Friends may call at the Owen-Neely Funeral Home in Blacksville from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 24. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 1 p.m. with the Evangelist Ben Jones officiating. Interment at a later date in the Daybrook Cemetery.
