MORGANTOWN—It’s nearly the end of the school year, and sports are rolling along into May. Softball, tennis, and lacrosse have all entered the postseason with sectionals, regionals, and state playoffs. Baseball and track and field are entering their final week of the regular season, having also completed OVAC conference play.
Morgantown took OVAC titles in baseball, softball, and girls’ track and field, with multiple local runners, throwers, and jumpers securing individual titles and quality finishes for Morgantown, University, Trinity Christian, and Clay-Battelle.
Baseball
Morgantown (20-8): MHS is currently the hottest team in the state, on a nine-game win streak. It will conclude the regular season this week, hosting Bridgeport and South Fayette (Pa.) on Wednesday and Thursday before entering sectionals next week.
University (13-11): The Hawks are winners of seven of their last eight games. They will wrap the regular season schedule with a road trip to Bridgeport on Thursday and a doubleheader in Martinsburg on Saturday.
Preston (8-8-1): The Knights suffered two one-run losses last week but have the chance to finish the regular season above .500 as they host Fairmont Senior on Thursday.
Trinity Christian (9-10): The Warriors have won three of their last five contests after a five-game losing streak plagued the middle of the campaign. The Warriors will close the regular season hosting Hundred on Thursday.
Clay-Battelle (10-7): The Cee-Bees have enjoyed a solid 2025 campaign and will conclude hosting Weir Wednesday before visiting Shadyside on Thursday and Valley on Friday.
Lacrosse
Morgantown (Boys): The Mohigans concluded the regular season 13-1 and will host Martinsburg on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the WVSLA state playoffs. MHS defeated University 14 to 7 to close the regular season.
Morgantown (Girls): MHS finished the regular season 7-7 and will travel to Buckhannon-Upshur for the WVSLA girls’ playoffs opening round. The Mohigans dropped their opening game of the season 8 to 7 to the Lady Bucs.
University (Boys): The Hawks finished the regular season 12-3 and will host Fairmont Senior on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the WVSLA state playoffs at 6:00 p.m.
University (Girls): UHS earned a first-round bye in the WVSLA state playoffs with a 13-1 regular season record.
Tennis:
Morgantown (Boys): MHS defeated University 4-0 in the semifinal round of the regional team tennis tournament on Monday and will battle Wheeling Park for the Region I team championship on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Marilla Park in Morgantown.
Morgantown (Girls): The Mohigans defeated Buckhannon-Upshur 4-0 to advance to the finals against Wheeling Park. Along with the boys, the Region I girls’ team championship will be held on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Marilla Park in Morgantown.
Track and Field:
Over the weekend, local schools competed at the OVAC championship in St. Clairsville, Ohio, and came home with some hardware.
With 118 points, Morgantown captured the girls’ 5A and overall team titles at the 2025 meet, while University finished fourth in the girls’ standings at 94 points.
Clay-Battelle sat in 22nd place with 44 points, and Trinity Christian finished with 24 points to place 33rd.
In the boys competition, University captured seventh with 82 points, and Morgantown took eighth with 78.
MHS’s Joaquin Summers set a school record in the 800-meter race in back-to-back weekends. He set the record at the OVAC qualifying meet with a 1.56.33, before turning around the following weekend at the OVAC championships with a 1.56.22.
