Novelis announces closure of Fairmont operation

FAIRMONT — Novelis announced Monday morning that it would be closing its operation in Fairmont on June 30.
The following statement was released by the aluminum plant, where about 185 workers will lose their jobs:
“Novelis is consolidating its U.S. operations and has made the difficult decision to close operations in Fairmont, West Virginia, which will take effect on June 30, 2025. Our workforce is deeply valued for their hard work and decades of dedication, and we’re committed to handling their transition with the utmost respect and care.”
We want to express our gratitude to the city of Fairmont and the state of West Virginia for allowing us to serve this region for many years. It’s been a privilege to be a part of this community.”
City of Fairmont leadership commits to growth and investment amid the announcement regarding the closure of Novelis.
While this news is a blow to the community, the City of Fairmont commits to the development and continued investment in projects that diversify Fairmont’s economy and create jobs in other sectors and opportunities for new light manufacturing investments.
“The people of Fairmont have faced challenges before, and we’ve always found a way forward,” Mayor Anne Bolyard said. “We can’t slow down, not now. We have to charge full speed ahead.”
Novelis is a subsidiary of Hindalco Industries Limited, an industry leader in aluminum, copper and metals; and a flagship company of the Aditya Birla Group based in Mumbai, India.
