MORGANTOWN — West Virginia swept a doubleheader against Lipscomb on Sunday to secure its second series win and remain undefeated on the season.
WVU (6-0) shut out the Bisons 5-0 in Game 1, with five pitchers combining on a two-hitter inside Ken Dugan Field in Nashville, Tenn.
In Game 2, Armani Guzman scored on a passed ball in the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie, before Brodie Kresser singled home Gavin Kelly in the eighth inning for a 4-2 victory.
The final game of the four-game series is scheduled for noon today.
Pitching was the key to the day, although WVU combined for three home runs in the two games.
Roby Porco and Chase Meyer combined for seven innings in the first game, while giving up just two hits. Each pitcher struck out five batters.
WVU’s bullpen covered the final two innings with hitless baseball, while giving up just one walk.
Both teams were scoreless through four innings, but Chase Swain changed that with a solo home run in the fifth.
After Sam White singled and stole second, Kyle West hit another home run for a 3-0 lead.
WVU scored two more in the seventh when Logan Sauve led off with a triple and scored on White’s ground-ball RBI. Alex Marot and West came up with singles and Jace Rinehart scored Marot with another ground ball.
Meyer picked up the win in relief, going 3 1/3 innings, while allowing one hit and no runs.
In Game 2, Michael Perazza hit a solo home run to give WVU a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Bisons (2-4) came back to tie the game 2-2 on a pair of RBI singles from Parks Bouck and Aaron Stelogeannis.
The Mountaineers took the lead for good when Guzman led off the seventh inning with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a ground ball and then scored when a high fastball got past Lipscomb catcher Jake Berg.
Kresser’s RBI hit in the eighth inning came with two outs after Kelly singled and moved to second on Skylar’s King bunt and then stole third base.
Carson Estridge picked up his second win of the season by pitching 4 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed four hits and struck out five.
WVU starter Gavin Van Kempen lasted 4 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on just two hits. He struck out three.
