WVU Board of Governors announces schedule for presidential search listening sessions

MORGANTOWN – The WVU Board of Governors has announced the dates and times for its planned listening sessions regarding the search for the next WVU president.

Sessions will be in person and virtual, to hear from faculty, staff, students and the community. In-person sessions will be held in Morgantown and at the regional campuses.

BOG vice-chair and Presidential Search Committee chair Patrice Harris said in a letter announcing the sessions, “As noted in earlier communications, the WVU Board of Governors is committed to engagement and input from the university community. We have developed an inclusive series of listening sessions to engage members of our community in determining the most important attributes of our next president.”

The sessions are being conducted by presidential search consultants WittKieffer.

Attendees will get updates on the search process. Harris said attendees should come prepared to discuss these questions:

  • What do you see as the key attractions for this leadership opportunity? What makes you proud to be part of the WVU community and excited about the future?
  • What are the skill sets, experiences, qualifications, credentials and personal attributes needed in the next President?
  • What are the key opportunities and challenges facing West Virginia University? How should the new President seek to capitalize on or address them?

Here are the scheduled sessions. All are in person unless noted as virtual.

Sept. 9

  • Morgantown faculty. 8:45-10 a.m., Mountainlair; 1-2:15 p.m., Health Sciences Center; 3:45-5 p.m., Erickson Alumni Center.
  • Morgantown community. 6-7:15 p.m., Erickson Alumni Center.

Sept. 10

  • Morgantown staff. 8:45-10 a.m., Mountainlair; 1-2:15 p.m., Health Sciences Center; 3-4:15 p.m., Erickson Alumni Center.
  • Morgantown students. 6-7:15 p.m., Erickson Alumni Center.

Sept. 11

  • Beckley. Faculty, 10:15-11:30 a.m.; community, noon to 1:15 p.m.; staff, 1:45-3 p.m.; students, 3:30-4:45 p.m.

Sept. 12

  • Morgantown faculty. 8:45-10 a.m., Erickson Alumni Center; 1-2:15 p.m., Health Sciences Center; 3:30-4:45 p.m., Mountainlair.
  • Morgantown staff. 10:30-11:45 a.m., Erickson Alumni Center.
  • Morgantown students. 7-8:30 p.m., Mountainlair.
  • Virtual session for faculty, staff and students, 5:30-6:45 p.m., Zoom, registration details will be confirmed closer to date.

Sept. 13

  • Keyser. Faculty, 10:15-11:30 a.m.; community, noon to 1:15 p.m.; staff, 1:45-3 p.m.; students, 3:30-4:45 p.m.

A date and time for a Charleston alumni and community session is to be determined. One listening session was held last month with the Faculty Senate leadership, Harris said.

Virtual opportunities for alumni are being coordinated through theWVU Alumni Association, Harriso said. Details will be shared in the coming days and in future editions of the Alumni Newsletter. Alumni may attend an in-person session that best matches their constituency, i.e. a faculty, staff or community session.

Current WVU President Gordon Gee will retire June 30, 2025.
