Mountain Valley murder suspect surrenders

The man accused of a deadly shooting at Mountain Valley Apartments on July 11 turned himself into the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department Wednesday evening and was arrested without incident, according to a press release from the department.

Arnold Johnson III, 19, of Odenton, Md., is charged with first-degree murder of Rashad Malik Alton, 21, of Morgantown.  Johnson was arraigned in Monongalia County Magistrate Court Thursday morning.

Court records state detectives interviewed multiple witnesses who said the victim and three other individuals went to the apartment complex to see a friend.

A verbal argument began among several of the individuals and witnesses stated they had to separate Alton and a man who goes by the street names “Trey,” “Tre5,” and/or “Five.”

Witnesses told detectives that “Trey” pulled out a gun and shot twice at Alton, who was struck once in the chest.  Detectives interviewed multiple witnesses throughout the investigation who identified “Trey” as the shooter.

According to the criminal complaint, detectives were also provided with the suspect’s phone number, SnapChat username, photograph and possible place of employment.

Using this information, the investigation led detectives to determine “Trey” is Arnold Johnson III and that he deliberately killed Alton.  A warrant for his arrest was issued July 12.

He is currently being held at North Central Regional Jail without bond.  A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday, August 16.
