Mon Health System celebrates Nurses Week

National Nurses Week is May 6-12 and Mon Health System is honoring its nurses and celebrating “through time” with decade-themed festivities.

National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6 and ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. This week annually recognizes the incredible nurses who embody the spirit of compassion and care every day in a health care setting.

Throughout the week, all Mon Health System hospitals will celebrate nurses with themed days and activities. Starting with Monday’s Nifty 50s and ending with Sunday’s Y2K Day, this week is packed full of free activities for all nurses. Activities  range from free meals, yoga classes, painting and game nights, to ice cream rounding, free gifts and more.

“Nurses are often referred to as the backbone of healthcare, and that couldn’t be more true, especially for our Mon Health System hospitals,” said Dr. Krystal Atkinson, chief administrative officer and chief nursing officer of Mon Health Medical Center and chief nursing executive of Mon Health System. “It is an honor to celebrate our dedicated nursing staff across the system this week and recognize the truly invaluable care that they provide day in and day out.”

Mon Health System makes a continual effort to provide a positive work environment for all nurses, offering flexible scheduling to promote work-life balance, encouraging continued education by providing scholarships and tuition assistance, promoting interprofessional empowerment through shared governance and more.

“We cannot thank our nurses enough for what they do and the commitment to our mission of enhancing the health of the communities we serve, one person at a time,” Atkinson said.

“Their enthusiasm and passion for their work is what sets their care apart from just doing their job, to truly and selflessly caring for their patients.”

Mon Health System encourages patients and visitors to thank a nurse this week and recognize the individuals who have made a difference in their care. One way to do this is by nominating a nurse for a DAISY Award. Nurses can be nominated by anyone who has been affected by their care — patients, family members, other nurses, physicians, other clinicians, and staff — anyone who has experienced or observed extraordinary, compassionate care being provided by a nurse.
