Fairview to host ‘Justice for All’ celebration

The town of Fairview will observe Independence Day with an old-fashioned celebration on July 4. This event offers a full day of activities.

The theme this year is “Justice for All.”

Festivities include the Ray Hedrick 5k Fun Run, the grand parade at 10 a.m., a concert by the Fairview Community Band and a speaking program with guest speaker Rod Myers at 1 p.m. Myers was born and raised in Fairview and is a 1986 graduate of North Marion High School. He studied criminal justice at Fairmont State University. After graduation in 1990, Myers worked in federal prisons across the country for 26 years, holding positions from summer intern to warden. Now retired, he lives in the Florida panhandle. Myers is the author of the fiction novel, “Survival on Walker Mountain: Life Behind the Wall.”

Following the speaking program, students from the Fairmont State University Academy for the Arts will provide entertainment, followed by a cake walk for all who want to participate, as well as games and contests for all ages.

The remainder of the evening includes magician Steve Haberman and performances by The Firelight Reckoning, the Fridley Boys and Jessica Schoonover and Rick Tincher with the Birch River Band. The celebration will conclude with fireworks at 10 p.m.

Plan to visit Diana Heaney and a host of other local artisans, crafters and vendors at the craft show at Potter’s House Art Center, 131 Main St., Fairview, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Admission is free.

Hometown Hot Dogs is sponsoring the volunteer fire department water battle at noon in the Fairview Food Bank parking lot and the corn hole tournament at 2:30 p.m. in the fire department bays. They will also host a hot dog eating contest at Hometown Hot Dogs (Fairview location) at 1 p.m. along with a 10-year anniversary celebration.

Throughout the day, several community organizations will sell concessions; otherwise, all activities are free of charge.

Organizations, groups, or individuals are welcome to participate in the parade. Contact Belinda Moore at 681-404-2470 or belinda.frausto@gmail.com as soon as possible.
