Robert Payne

Robert Jackson Payne “Bob”, 85, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 4, 2023. He was born June 5, 1937, one of four sons of the late Roy and Alice Payne and was raised in the Cheat Neck area of Monongalia County.

Bob was a lifelong resident of Morgantown and an avid Christian believer. He was known as a hard worker, easy going, patient man, with a dry sense of humor that he still shared with family until his passing. Bob served in the United States Army. He was an avid bowler and he enjoyed traveling with his brothers Ed and Dan to bowling tournaments. Bob was a member of Westover United Methodist Church as well as Westover Senior Center.

Bob worked at a young age for his dad at Tri State Drilling and later ran the business with his brother Ed. Bob went on to work for WVU, driving buses between campuses. He left lasting impressions on the students he met along the way.

Bob is survived by four of his children, Cyndi Owens (Mark) of Kernersville, N.C., Robin Lattinville of Ledgewood, N.J., Jennifer Payne and Joe Payne (Kim) of Salisbury Md.; stepsons, Steve Buchanan (Ginny), John Buchanan (Debbie) of Morgantown; 10 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; a brother, Danny (Joyce) Payne of Orange Park Fla.; sister-in-law, Barbara Payne of Morgantown; along with many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bob is preceded in death by his wife Mary Lou Payne; brothers, Ellison Payne and Edward Payne; and a son, Bill Payne.

Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, from 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Stacy Chrise-Tritt officiating. Interment will follow at Lawnwood Cemetery in Morgantown with full military honors being provided by Camp Dawson and the Westover VFW Post 9916.
