Sally J. Longfellow, 87, of Point Marion, Pa., passed away peacefully Friday, March 24, 2023, at her home, with her loving family at her side, just 19 days after her beloved husband of 69 years, Richard Longfellow. Born in Seattle, on April 10, 1935, she was a daughter of the late Howard E. and Lillian (Thompson) Ross.
Jer. 29:11 — For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord … to give you a future and a hope.
Sally and Richard were involved with the ministry of Jesus Christ for years, beginning with the American Sunday School Union (later renamed American Missionary Fellowship), planting churches in eight counties in Southwest Washington and under Richard’s Mission Church Fellowship. She taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school classes, played piano, sang duets with Richard and managed the camp kitchens for many of their mission outreaches, including summer Bible camps and Homeschoolers Outdoor Education camps.
Over the years, Sally helped to raise more than 80 foster children. After Richard’s retirement from the ministry, they opened the Longfellow House Bed and Breakfast in their home and Sally managed it; she loved cooking and serving her guests as a living example of Christ.
Sally was a member of the Kelso (Wash.) Garden Club and served terms as vice president and president. After they moved to Point Marion, Pa., Sally joined the Uniontown Flower Club and volunteered at the Friendship Hill National Historic Site and the Point Marion Public Library. Richard C. Longfellow passed away on March 5, 2023. She was also preceded by a brother, Norman Ross, and a sister, Deanna Goodwin. Surviving are her three children and their spouses, Kenneth Longfellow (Kathy), of Bellevue, Wash.; Constance “Connie” Spinelli (Joseph), of Bozeman, Mont., and Diane Beard (David), of Morgantown; 10 grandchildren, Adam, Isaac, Jacob, Jedidiah, Jonathan, Nathan, Ruth, Sarah, Tabitha and Zechariah; and nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside services for her family and friends will be held at the Cedar Grove Cemetery, New Geneva, Pa., with Pastor Keith Larson officiating, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 26.
Arrangements are in the care of the Richard R. Herod Funeral Home, Point Marion, Pa.
