Lulabelle Barker, 75, of Newburg, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2023, at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was born on Aug. 29, 1947, in Newburg, daughter of the late James Monroe and Susan “Susie” (Plum) Akers.
She previously worked for the Preston County Board of Education as a cook. Lulabelle loved cooking, baking, watching birds, getting flowers and collecting bells and rocks. Her life was her family and she loved spending time with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, whom she married on June 29, 1966, Roy “Sonny” Walter Barker; three children, Sherry Barker, Newburg, Mike Barker and Janie, Morgantown, Melissa “Missy” Benkiel and Mark, Gainesville, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Zachary, Tyler, Danielle, Michael, Mason, Joey and Jackie; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Linda Nelson and James, of Tunnelton; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Lulabelle is preceded in death by one brother, James “Jimmy” Akers.
Family and friends will be received at Bolyard Funeral Home, 79 Morgantown Ave., Newburg, from 3-7 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, and from 10 a.m. until time of service at noon on Sunday, March 26, with Pastor Mark Benkiel officiating. Interment will follow at the Shay’s Chapel Cemetery.
