Gregory P. “Greg” Maxwell, 62, of Morgantown, passed away Monday morning, March 13, 2023, at his residence, surrounded by his wife and four children, after a bravely fought battle with cancer.
Born April 2, 1960, in Clarksburg, Greg was a son of the late Henry E. Maxwell Sr. and Marcilee Dodd Maxwell.
Greg is survived by his wife of more than 20 years, Iris “Jeanie” Loughry Maxwell; their four children, Christina Gnagey-Elliott (Charlie), Carrie Lynn Moats (Eric), Gregory P. Maxwell Jr. and Lindsey J. Huffman; nine grandchildren: Tamara Reynolds, Elijah Reynolds, Azar Moats, Hope Pisino, Alison Elliott, Issac Elliott, Addelynn Maxwell, Carter Huffman and Preston Huffman; a brother, Henry E. “Happy” Maxwell Jr. (Kathy); and two sisters, Lisa Wilfong and Teresa Whitehair.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Tammy Flint, and a brother, Ed Maxwell.
Greg was a former combat engineer reservist with the U.S. Army’s 459th Engineering Company in Bridgeport. For many years, Greg worked independently and for several companies as a fence installer. He then worked for over 20 years as an engineering technician for CTL Engineering in Morgantown. There aren’t many bridges, roadways or building projects in Monongalia County that he didn’t work on during that time.
He was a “jack of all trades” and loved to build and invent new things. To those who knew him best, Greg had his own special “language” and sayings that he used. He enjoyed watching TV — his favorite shows being “Seinfeld,” “Battlebots,” “Moonshiners” and anything educational.
Before his cancer diagnosis, he enjoyed dining out and snacking on Hershey bars, Reese’s cups, pudding and ice cream — and he always had a stash to share with his kids and grandkids.
Friends may join the family to honor Greg’s life and legacy at Smith Funeral & Cremation Care, 108 Holland Ave., Westover/Morgantown, from 3 p.m. until the time of the funeral service beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 17, with Pastor Dan Meadows officiating. Following the funeral service, Greg’s request for cremation will be honored by his family.
