Thelma DeWitt

Thelma Arlene DeWitt, 91, of Terra Alta, passed away Sunday March 5, 2023, at Stonerise Kingwood with family by her side.

The daughter of the late John Nelson Blair and Wilda Madge Baker Murphy, she was born July 21, 1931 in Terra Alta.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Terra Alta. She retired from Hopemont Hospital.

Thelma enjoyed quilting and crossword puzzles. She like to have vegetable and flower gardens and enjoyed canning. She was a WVU Mountaineer fan and Steeler fan. She always liked to gather her family for a Sunday meal and loved to be around her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and granddog, Bailey. She was a loving mother who taught her children how to work and respect others.

She is survived by four sons, Charles DeWitt Jr., of Lenox, Randall DeWitt, of Terra Alta, Jimmy (Jane) DeWitt, of Arthurdale, and Michael (Linda) DeWitt, of Lake Lynn, Pa.; two daughters and spouses, Linda (Buddy) Freeland, of Terra Alta, and Brenda (Rowdy) Dixon, of Lenox; two sisters, Phyllis Menear, of Rowlesburg, and Janice Menear, of Kingwood; and 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles DeWitt Sr.; two sons, Sgt. Clifford DeWitt and infant son Terry DeWitt; a daughter-in-law, Shirley DeWitt; two sisters, Rita Moats and Carolyn Kelly; one brother, Larry Murphy; her mother and father-in-law, Harry and Goldie DeWitt and her childhood friend, Coralie Stemple.

Family and friends will be received at the Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home, Terra Alta, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday and from noon until the 1 p.m. time of service on Thursday March 9, with the Rev. Michael Lantz officiating. Burial will follow in the Terra Alta Cemetery.
