Arizona runs past WVU to avoid three-game sweep by Mountaineers

MORGANTOWN — Mac Bingham hit two home runs and drove in seven on Sunday to help Arizona run past West Virginia 15-5 and avoid a three-game sweep at Hi Corbett Field.

The Arizona outfielder hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the first that gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.

He added a three-run shot in the fifth that helped give Arizona a 13-4 lead. For good measure, he added a run-scoring double and a sacrifice fly that scored another run as part of his day.

BOX SCORE

In all, Arizona (4-3) pounded out 20 hits, including seven for extra bases.

It all came against a WVU (4-3) pitching staff that struggled.

WVU starter Grant Siegel (1-1), a sophomore transfer from Tulane, lasted just three innings and gave up nine hits and six runs.

Reliever Robby Porco allowed five hits and four more runs over 1.1 innings and a combination of five other pitchers gave up four more runs on six hits.

The loss ended the Mountaineers’ four-game win streak, but with two earlier victories against Arizona, WVU still picked up its first series victory of the season.

Sophomore second baseman J.J. Wetherholt hit a solo home run in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to seven games.

Wetherholt’s batting average is up to .469 through the first seven games. He also added two stolen bases on Sunday, giving him 12 on the season, which leads the nation.

Grant Hussey also added a solo home run for the Mountaineers, who will play in an exhibition game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at 8:40 p.m. Monday, before traveling to Williamsburg, Va. to play William & Mary on Friday. It was Hussey’s first home run of the season.

Freshman outfielder Sam White also added three hits for WVU. He now leads the Mountaineers in hitting with a .478 batting average. Ellis Garcia and Tyler Cox also recorded RBIs for the Mountaineers.
