Local athletes wrestling in girls’ state tournament this weekend

One of the fastest-growing sports in the Mountain State will crown champions this weekend as the fourth West Virginia Girls Wrestling Championship will be held in Parkersburg Saturday.

Although the WVSSAC does not sanction girls wrestling as its own sport, it does sanction both the high school and middle school girls’ tournaments, both of which will be held Saturday in Parkersburg. There are 92 high schoolers bracketed in 12 weight classes and 56 middle schoolers in 10 weight classes.

Locally, University High School will have two representatives and South Middle School will have nine.

Representing the Hawks will be Bailey Emery at 114 and Toria Tower at 145. Emery is the number-one seed in her weight class and has a first-round bye. She will wrestle either Washington’s Charlotte Kershisnik or Liberty Harrison’s Kaylee Moore in the second round. Moore will wrestle Bluefield’s Elisa Riley in the first round.

Representing South Middle School will be Kinsley Martin (94), Lilyann Burkhart (94), Zoe Wolford (102), Madelyn Mazzoni (128), Nevaeh Feeley-Mack (128), Victoria O’Connor (165), Malia Dailey (185), Jaria Hawkins (185) and Janie O’Connor (235).

Action at the Elite Sports Center in Parkersburg is set to begin at 1 p.m.
