
Donald Robert Smith, 90, of Westover, passed away Sunday, Feb. 5, 2023, at the Madison Center in Morgantown.
He was born Oct. 10, 1932, in Kingwood, a son of the late Jacob William Smith and the late Beulah Tusing Smith.
Donald graduated from Kingwood High School in 1952 and played running back on the undefeated 1949 football team. He worked at West Virginia University and retired as a sheet metal mechanic in 1987 after 31 years of service. He was also a ticket taker at Mountaineer football games for over 15 years.
Donald loved being in the outdoors and was an avid golfer, hunter, and fisherman. He liked to camp and fish on Shavers Fork, where he had a camper for many years in Bowden. He was also a loving family man, as he was a great husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Frances J. Smith.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary F. Smith (Rick Cortez), and his son John A. Smith (Stephanie), both of Morgantown; and his granddaughters, Connie Buchanan, Melinda Smith, Emily Corathers (Isaac), Brittany DeLaurier (Kyle Hyman) and Megan DeLaurier. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren including the two newest additions to the family, his grandsons Clarkson Hyman and Henry Corathers.
A celebration of Donald’s life will be held at a later date.
