Ruby Akers

Ruby Joan Akers, 85, of Shinnston, passed away on Jan. 7, 2023, at Monongahela Valley Hospital in Pennsylvania. She was born at Lamberts Run in Harrison County on Jan. 18, 1937, to the late William Ray Howe and Arizona (Shrader) Howe.

She worked as a CNA at Locust Manor in Washington, Pa. and at The Heritage in Bridgeport. She enjoyed sewing and baking. She was well known for her baked beans and fudge.

Ruby is survived by two daughters: Deborah K. Akers-Palmer and husband Gregg, of Fredericktown, Pa., and Tammy Wentz and husband Eric, of Morgantown; three grandsons: Geoffrey Jones and fiancé Halie Willard, Allen Bebout and wife Jennifer and Lucas Bebout; three great-granddaughters, Lacey Higginbotham, Destiny Jones and Morgan Jones; six great-grandsons: Preston Bebout, Chase Bebout, Brody Bebout, Wesley Bebout, Reid Bebout and Levi Heft; one great-great-grandson, Parker Hirschi; two nieces, Melody Maxwell and husband Scott, of Lumberport, and Crystal Thompson and husband Eddie, of Lumberport; four nephews, Randy Howe and wife Janie, of Haywood, Steve Howe, Melvin Howe and wife Kim and Shane Howe and wife Tabby, all of Lumberport; and two sisters-in-law: June Howe and Wilma Howe, both of Lumberport.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Lemuel Akers; two brothers, Melvin and Carroll Howe; one sister, Eva Howe; one grandson, Ian Wentz; and one sister-in-law, Joann Howe. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

The family would like to thank and acknowledge Washington Health System-California office, Washington Health System Cardiovascular Care, Washington Health System Wound Care, Mountain State Dermatology, Hillman Cancer Center, East Bethlehem VFD and Amedisys Home Care Nurses.

Family and friends will be received at Dorsey Funeral Home, 701 S. Pike St., Shinnston, from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, and from noon until time of service, 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, with Pastor Ron Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Shinnston Memorial Cemetery.
