WVU’s Erik Stevenson apologizes for actions that led to two technical fouls

MORGANTOWN — In his first public appearance since the WVU men’s basketball team dropped a pair of road games to begin Big 12 play, guard Erik Stevenson apologized Friday for his actions that led to two costly technical fouls in those games.

“My actions did not represent this program the way it should be,” Stevenson said. “This coaching staff, this fan base and to my teammates, I want to apologize for that.

“I know how serious it is. I know that my actions didn’t technically cost us the game, but they prevented me from staying in the game, which could have helped us win both of those ball games.”

In the second halves against both Kansas State and Oklahoma State, Stevenson was whistled for a technical foul and eventually fouled out of both games.

The Mountaineers (10-4, 0-2 Big 12) went on to lose both games by a combined 13 points, falling to Kansas State in overtime after leading by as many as 14 points in the first half.

“Those are things I just don’t do on a regular basis,” Stevenson continued. “I know it doesn’t look good on my part. I just wanted to clarify my apologies for those actions, especially to this fan base and to coach (Bob Huggins).

“I’d like to move on from it and put it in the past.”

Stevenson is WVU’s top scorer at 14.1 points per game heading into today’s game against No. 3 Kansas. He also leads the Mountaineers with 30 3-pointers.

He didn’t take questions about the incidents, but added that it wouldn’t be difficult for him in the future to keep his emotions in check.

“I don’t have any issues at all,” he said. “The answer is ‘no.’ ”
