Gmiter announces end of football career

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia offensive lineman James Gmiter will be walking away from the game of football, he announced on his Twitter account Sunday afternoon.

Gmiter, in his fifth year at WVU, tweeted Sunday, “I’m going to miss this game…thank you for everything.”

The redshirt-junior has been out with an injury for four weeks, last playing on Oct. 13 against Baylor.
West Virginia head coach Neal Brown announced on Nov. 1 that Gmiter’s mother, Kimberly, had passed away early in the morning the previous Sunday.

“We just ask all Mountaineers to be thinking about James and his family and to pray for them,” Brown said at the time.

“I’m sending prayers to that whole family,” added defensive lineman Dante Stills, who came to WVU alongside Gmiter in 2018. “I’m sorry for his loss and that family because she was a great woman. I saw her at every game with high spirits and always positive.”

Gmiter, a father of two, shared a tweet later Sunday that said he would forgo his final year of eligibility for a job in law enforcement. The tweet said Gmiter has accepted a job with the WVU Police Department and will be heading to the police academy soon.

A Bethel Park, Pa. native, Gmiter played in 39 games with 31 starts during his Mountaineer career. He started all 13 games in 2021 and all six in 2022 prior to his injury.
