Winners in WVU’s 2022 beard-growing contest are announced

It was a hairy situation Monday in the Mountainlair, as organizers of WVU’s time-honored beard-growing competition announced this year’s winner.

Kyle Rochau, a coaching and teaching studies major from Des Plaines, Ill., took home first-place honors for his follicles.

First-place prize is $100.

Coming in second was Ben McCardle, of Moundsville, who is studying exercise physiology at the university. He scored $75.

In third place was Bernardo Rocamora Jr., an aerospace engineering major from Morgantown. Rocamora’s manly chin-win earned him a cool $50 cash.

In all, 14 students entered the shaving showdown.

According to WVU, the contest has been around for more than 70 years.

Started in 1949, it is the “oldest continual event of the week.”

Mountaineer Week continues through Sunday. The popular annual arts and crafts fair and quilt show are set for 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday in the Mountainlair Ballrooms and Elizabeth Moore Hall, respectively. Admission is free for each events.
