Virginia Vanin

Virginia A. “Jenny” (Mares) Vanin, 91, of Tyrone Road, Morgantown, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2022. She was born Dec. 31, 1930, in Richard (Monongalia County), a daughter of the late Premo Mares and Cathrina Polentes Mares.

She was Roman Catholic by faith. She was a founding member of Good Council Friary, a member of St. Luke’s Church and attended St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church with her family.

She is survived by one son and spouse, Dr. John R. and Dr. Sandra K. Vanin, of Morgantown; one daughter and spouse, Giovanna C. and Larry Mastrovich, of Coto de Caza, Calif.; her grandchildren, Andrea Danielle Vanin, Marc Alexander Vanin, David Vincent Mastrovich and Zachary Michael Mastrovich; and her great-granddaughter, Audra Mae Vanin.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 54 and a half years, Romildo “Mike” Vanin; her brother, Louis Albert Mares; and her sister, Mary Jane Katolsky.

Jenny’s family would like to thank the Rev. Father Phillip Szabo, the Rev. Father John DiBacco and Sister Rachel Blaise. Additionally, all doctors, nurses, aides and staff at Harmony with a special thank you to Nicole Zahradnik. In addition, a special thank you to Melissa Estep, aides and nurses of Morgantown Amedisys Hospice who provided extraordinary care and comfort.

The family would like to acknowledge her nieces, Betsy Woodrum and Tecla DeBoni, for their weekend visits, her cousin and spouse, Anthony Polentes and Sharon and their daughter, Toni Lynn, who taxied her to church, and neighbors, Robbie Robinson and Jenny Sue Ridgeway, who checked on her regularly.
“Nonnie,” as known to her family, was provided with extra special care throughout most of her life by her loving and devoted daughter-in-law, Sandra Vanin.

After graduating from Morgantown High School in 1948, Jenny met and married a handsome man from Italy, and thereafter, devoted herself to her family.

She was a prolific knitter, crocheter and baker and she showered her family and friends in an endless supply of doilies, afghan blankets and pepperoni rolls. She rode her tractor daily, cutting grass well into her 80s.

According to Jenny’s wishes, Father John DiBacco will conduct a private Mass of Christian Burial. She will then be laid to rest with her husband, Mike, at Lawnwood
Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Ursula Food Pantry & Outreach, P.O. Box 18, Pursglove, WV 26546 or Amedisys Foundation, 3854 American Way, Suite A, Baton Rouge, LA 70816.
