Clay-Battelle dominates Webster behind strong rushing performance from Carson Shriver

BLACKSVILLE – Sometimes winning a football game doesn’t have to be pretty. It can be as easy as putting your foot in the ground and pushing the other team the way they don’t want to be going.

That’s exactly what Clay-Battelle did Friday night against Webster County. At least that’s what the Cee-Bees’ 323 rushing yards said in a 44-0 victory.

Senior quarterback Carson Shriver accounted for 234 of those himself.

The opening drive of the game for C-B found Shriver overthrowing a receiver on an attempted pass. The ball was intercepted and returned to the C-B 25-yard line, however the ball was fumbled on the return and was recovered by the home team, giving the Cee-Bees another shot on offense.

They would capitalize on the very next snap as Shriver connected on a pass to Zachary Hall, who ran for 76 yards to the end zone to open the scoring. After a two-point conversion, C-B lead 8-0, the score after the first quarter. Shriver threw for 121 yards on the night to go along with his performance on the ground.

C-B head coach Ryan Wilson praised the performance of his team overall against a team in WCHS that he says is better than what the score reflects.

“Webster County is a good football team and they were prepared for us tonight,” Wilson said of his opponents. “But give the credit to our kids and coaches tonight, we played lights out. They’re a good passing team and we only gave up eight yards tonight in the air. Only 138 total for the total game. Really proud of our kids tonight.”

Shriver would get his first touchdown in the second quarter on a 24 yard run that extended the lead to 14-0 after a failed conversion attempt.

After a three-and-out by the WCHS offense, the ensuing punt was downed at the two-yard line, pinning the Cee-Bees deep in their own territory.

But for Shriver, it doesn’t really matter where he is on the field, if he finds the open hole in the offensive line and gets into open space, he can make a play at any moment.

That moment came with four minutes to play before halftime, when Shriver broke through the middle and ran all the way for a 98 yard touch down. C-B would go into the half leading 20-0 and in total control. Two more rushing touch downs in the third quarter extended the lead to 35-0 for C-B after three.

Maddox Shriver ran for a five yard score, and then Hall tallied his second touch down on a 15-yard run before the end of the third quarter. Carson Shriver also went down with an ankle injury at the end of the third and did not return. Coach Wilson says it isn’t serious and that he should be fine.

JC Spears then came in at quarterback for C-B and before the game ended, threw a 35-yard pass to Mason Chisler for a touch down, making the lead 44-0 for his team. The game would end by the same score.

“Couldn’t be more proud of our team. It’s been a good grind, we are 5-1 now and get to take next week off to catch our breath which is something we need,” Wilson said, looking forward. “We have some bumps and bruises and will take the time to regroup and make sure that we are ready for the home stretch of the season.”

The Cee-Bees will return to action at home on October 14th when they host the undefeated Cameron Dragons.
