Thelma Mason

After 49 years apart, Thelma J Hamilton Mason had a heavenly reunion with her husband, Robert L. Mason I. Thelma left this world on Aug. 10, 2022 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Thelma was born in Booth, a mining camp, on Nov. 15, 1933, the daughter of the late Harold Hamilton and Gertrude V. Boggs Hamilton Gentile. She was a true “Coal miner’s daughter.”

Thelma spent many years in the field of service to others. She worked at the Morgan Shirt Factory, Gentile Glass Company, Tony’s Restaurant and then at her passion as a cook at Westchester/Carlyle Halls, Summit Hall, Delta Gamma, Phi Beta Phi and lastly at Chi Omega until her stroke in 2010. She enjoyed being a “Mom” to the young ladies in the sororities.

Thelma is survived by her son, Robert L. Mason II and wife Karen; daughter, Janice Bender and husband Steve; daughter, Linda Rosenberger, who lovingly cared for her until her passing; grandchildren, Erica Blosser, Heather Mason, Katie Boone, Stephen R. Bender, Brian Bender and Randy Rodeheaver; 11 great-grandchildren; and brother, James Hamilton.

Thelma is preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Mason I; father, Harold Hamilton; mother, Gertrude Gentile; stepfather, John R. Gentile; brother, Harold Hamilton Jr.; and her sister, Brenice Frere.
Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14. Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 15 with Pastor Lynda Masters officiating. Thelma will then be laid to rest alongside her husband at East Oak Grove Cemetery.

Thelma’s family would like to extend special thanks to Derek and Lauren from Amedisys Home Health, Carla and Robin from Amedisys Hospice, April, Ina and Wendy from Companion Care and Teresa, Mikki and Janice from WV Aging. Also, many thanks to all who helped with the care of Thelma through the years.
