Guest essay: Welcoming back students with Welcome Week events

by G. Corey Farris

Summer is almost over, and that means the return of our West Virginia University students. I, for one, am excited to welcome our students back to campus for the start of the 2022-23 academic year.

While the return of students always brings extra enthusiasm and spirit to our town, I also recognize that it brings challenges that aren’t present during the summertime. Our goal is to welcome our students with limited inconvenience and interruptions for our community neighbors in Morgantown and neighboring areas.

Welcome Week begins on Thursday, and extends through Aug. 16. Classes for all students begin on Aug. 17.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to help our students move into their residence halls and make their first WVU experiences ones that they’ll remember forever.

As we see an influx in people to the Morgantown area, we encourage all Morgantown motorists to use caution, as there may be traffic and those unsure of where to go. WVU will have police, event and security staff available to help keep the flow of traffic moving.

Here are some additional details to help you navigate and plan around larger WVU events during Welcome Week

Move-in will take place starting on Thursday and run through Saturday. Expect traffic near residence halls from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. WVU, in coordination with the City of Morgantown, will have additional Police and Housing/Residence Life staff available to help keep the flow of traffic moving.

FallFest, the university’s annual Welcome Week concert, returns this year and will be held from 4-10 p.m. Aug. 16 on the Evansdale area of campus. It’s likely there will be traffic into the late evening hours in that area of Morgantown. There is also a chance for those residing in the Evansdale and Suncrest neighborhoods to hear music from the artists during this time. We appreciate your understanding.

Welcome Week offers new students a perfect blend of fun, academic and service-related opportunities. The full schedule of Welcome Week events may be found at http://welcomeweek.wvu.edu.

We look forward to being good partners to you and your communities throughout this academic year. Thanks for supporting WVU students!

Let’s Go!
