Morgantown Post 2 down Clarksburg Post 13 to earn 13th win this season

MORGANTOWN – After a shootout of a game against Bridgeport on June 29th that was tallied as a 14-11 loss, the Morgantown Post 2 baseball team found itself at a record of 5-11. Since that game, Post 2 have won 8 out of its last ten contests, with the most recent on Thursday night lifting Morgantown to a .500 record at 13-13.

Post 2 took an early lead off of the bat of Aaron Forbes when the third baseman sent a solo homer over the center field fence in the first inning. Clarksburg would match the run in the top of the second on a double to left field.

From that point however, Post 2 wouldn’t look back. The tie game didn’t last long, as Jacob Kennell scored from third after the Post 13 pitcher committed a balk which allowed every baserunner to advance.

Cody Thomas then singled and scored Zach Brennan, giving him one of his four RBI’s that lead all batters. Thomas went 3-4 at the plate with four RBI, and also scored three runs himself. Tommy Montague then singled to score Forbes for the fourth run of the game for Post 2. Three more runs in the bottom of the third gave Morgantown the comfortable lead at 7-1.

In fact, five total players (Forbes, Brennan, Thomas, Tommy Montague, and Caleb Cottle) had multiple hits for Post 2. Another outstanding stat was the total number of bases for Morgantown as batters were able to tally 24 total bases.

Clarksburg did manage two runs in the top of the fourth inning, but once again Thomas would deliver for Post 2. The former UHS player hit a long bomb to left field with two men on base, giving Morgantown a 10-3 lead.

Each team would go scoreless in the fifth. Clarksburg came back two runs in the top of the sixth, but the deficit was too much by that point at 10-5. Not to mention, Post 2 wasn’t done yet.

That 10-5 lead would quickly become 14-5 after Post 2 scored a run on four straight at-bats. Jett Walters started it off with a single to center that scored Thomas. He was followed by Cottle who doubled, then Park Croyle hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Walters to touch home. The final run for Morgantown came off the bat of Brady McNew after an error from the first baseman for Clarksburg allowed Cottle to score.

The result is one of the most important for Post 2 of the season, as a team that once sat at 5-11 just two weeks ago, earned its 13th win bringing its record to .500. With three games left in the regular season, Morgantown will look to take its record above the .500 mark.

Post 2 will return to Dale Miller Field tomorrow to host Cumberland, Maryland. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
