A pair of Wednesday water line breaks impact flow of water, traffic

MORGANTOWN — A pair of water line breaks Wednesday have boil advisories in place for about 38 customers of the Morgantown Utility Board, including three businesses.

One of the breaks occurred when MUB contractor Snyder & Son, LLC, struck the existing 8-inch water main at the University Avenue/Evansdale Drive intersection while drilling for the placement of 530 feet of new 8-inch line between Evansdale Drive and Oakland Avenue.

That break knocked water service out for three area businesses and temporarily closed a section of Evansdale Drive and one lane of University Avenue.

The MUB Board of Directors approved a $75,260 contract for that project at the end of May.

MUB Director of Communications Chris Dale said the utility also experienced a break in a water line along Tyrone Avery Road, impacting 35 customers.

According to Dale, both water line breaks were fixed and the water system was being turned back on by 2:30 or so Wednesday afternoon.

However, upon completion of the work the utility must test and analyze water samples for a minimum of 24 hours before lifting boil advisories for all impacted customers.

“When test results indicate that the water meets drinking water standards, those affected are notified that the boil water advisory has been lifted,” Dale said.

Additionally, MUB conducted hydrant flow testing on Research Park Road Wednesday, which may have caused some customers to notice discolored water or drops in water pressure.

Dale said customers who experience water discoloration should run the cold water tap until the water runs clear. If it is not clear after a few minutes, turn it off, wait a few more minutes, then repeat the process.
