Michael Griffith, new prep sports writer

Hello readers! My name is Michael Griffith and I was brought onto The Dominion Post staff in November as their new prep sports reporter.

For those of you who don’t know me, I am 29 years old and from a small town called Elkview, WV. I have been living in Morgantown since 2011, however. That’s almost a third of my life, which is crazy to think about. My wife, Morgan, and I have been married since September 4, 2020 and we live in a townhouse with our dog. No children yet, but Bella plays the part very well. My wife is the Assistant Director of Student Involvement at WVU, so we stay pretty busy between our two jobs.

Growing up I always knew I wanted to do something that involved sports. My family and friends would always tell me how not only did I love watching sports, I was very knowledgeable about them as well. My Mom always tells me about random sports facts I would tell her out of nowhere that blew her mind. I discovered my love for writing late into my junior year of high school and decided that I would try to major in something that involved writing.

I graduated from Capital HS in Charleston in 2011, where I played the saxophone in the marching band. I also played basketball there for three years before injuring my knee my junior year. I came to WVU right out of high school as a broadcast journalism major in the J-School. I struggled in college at first and decided that after my first two years, I should take a break. Fast forward to 2018 when I decided to return, I still wanted to be a writer so I continued the journalism/English pursuit. I graduated from WVU with my Regents Bachelor of Arts in Professional Writing and completed minors in journalism, English, and creative writing. A little bit of everything rounded out my degree. I honestly never thought I would go back to school and finish my undergraduate degree. That was one of the proudest moments of my life and probably always will be. Never give up on your dreams.

Graduating in the middle of a global pandemic isn’t something I would recommend to anyone. Like most, I began applying for a million jobs right after graduation. However, the pandemic made it very difficult for a lot of companies to bring in new hires for their positions. Most of the positions I applied for weren’t even responding to me. So I went back to my roots and began working at the Chick-fil-A on Patteson Drive, where I worked while I was in school. I worked there for a year and a half before injuring my knee again and requiring surgery. Right before my operation, in November, is when I was hired at The Dominion Post.

I’ve always loved the saying, “Find something you love doing, and you will never work a day in your life.” Personally, I feel that is what I have done with this job at The Dominion Post covering prep sports. I love sports and I love writing. So I combined the two and now, I am having the best time bringing the coverage of all of the amazing talent we have at the local level in so many different sports. In my short time with the paper so far, I have been able to talk about some amazing people and the talent of the kids here is awesome. I hope going forward that I am able to do all that I can to highlight the things these kids and coaches and parents are achieving. Stay tuned!
