Morgantown High softball sweeps season series over University

The Morgantown High softball team used an all-around approach to complete a season sweep of rival University High with a 6-1 victory Tuesday at Mylan Park.

MHS pitcher Mikala Rogers struck out 12 batters and only allowed one hit over six innings pitched.

The Hawks were able to find decent contact against Rogers in the first inning, but would strand two runners, which deemed a crucial moment of the game due to a lack of baserunners for the rest of the game.

The Mohigans opened the scoring in their first turn at the plate, when Abigail Harki hit a fly ball to the shortstop that was dropped. She then advanced to second on a throwing error and MHS would score two runs.

“I thought it was a great team effort,” said MHS head coach Lorri Lipscomb. “We did a much better job with getting timely hits with runners in scoring position.”

After going three up and three down in two straight innings, the Hawks finally found some offense when a pop fly hit by Ashlynn Weaver was dropped, allowing Lauren Huebsch to score from second base. That would be the only chance UHS would see to chip away at the deficit it faced.

Three more runs would come for MHS in the bottom of the fourth inning making it 5-1. Emily Goldcamp hit a solo shot to right field in the next inning to make it six on the night for the Mohigans.

Rogers threw another strong game for MHS, allowing only one hit and striking out 12 batters.

“Mikala threw a fantastic game and our bats came alive tonight, defense did a great job as well.” Lipscomb said.

Autumn Stemple took the mound for the Hawks, striking out nine batters. However she allowed six hits and six runs on the night.

“The two errors in the first inning set the tone for my team,” UHS head coach Mindy Parks said. “My team needs to get tougher mentally. They have it all when it comes to the physical aspect of the game. They need to learn how to keep a positive attitude and fight through their mistakes. I am confident they will correct this and succeed in the end.”

MHS will host John Marshall at 5 p.m. Thursday, while UHS travels to Lewis County at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
