University softball can’t overcome experience of Steubenville

MORGANTOWN — Julianna King was near royalty on the mound Monday at Mylan Park.

Steubenville’s pitcher hurled a one-hit shutout and the Big Red took advantage of seven University High errors in route to a 16-0 victory.

The Hawks showed their youth, with nearly half of their 13 players either freshmen or sophomores.

The game was stopped after five innings due to the mercy rule.

The Big Red jumped in front early when Sena Smith singled up the middle to open the scoring. The Hawks would only allow one run in the first, but struggled against the strong pitching of King, who also struck out 11, while walking only one.

The Hawks (7-5) lone hit came on a single by senior Meysa Heitmann in the second inning. However, three straight strikeouts from King ended any chance of UHS gaining momentum.

Paige Matteson went 3 for 4 with three RBIs to lead Steubenville and Smith also drove in three runs.

Errors plagued the Hawks as they tallied seven of them, something UHS don’t typically do.

“This game doesn’t define the team that we are. We have never made the errors we made tonight. Their pitcher was definitely the best we have faced this season,” UHS head coach Mindy Parks said. “I’m hopeful that they will bounce back and be the team that they are capable of being for tomorrow night.”
The Hawks will meet crosstown rival Morgantown at 5 p.m. today at Mylan Park.
