Meals on Wheels looking for volunteers

The Morgantown Area Meals on Wheels (MAMOW) program delivers hot meals to many local senior and disabled citizens, but the organization relies on community volunteers to accomplish its goal.

“We are in need of volunteer drivers,” said MAMOW Manager Kathy Molnar.  “We have some students that are leaving for the summer.  We have some people that are starting to travel because the COVID restrictions are somewhat lifted.  It’s a bit of a turnover.”

Molnar said drivers pick up the meals between 9:15 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.  Deliveries usually take about an hour or a little longer.

“We drive 10 routes within a 10-mile radius of Morgantown and the routes are divided up by area, so you might be going to Suncrest or, you know, you might be going someplace else,” Molnar said.  “We also courier meals out to Goshen Road and the Rock Forge area, and sometimes drivers will go and pick up their meals there if it’s closer for their delivery area.”

Meals on Wheels delivers a little over 100 meals a day locally, so roughly 500 meals a week are delivered by the group, according to Molnar.

If daily deliveries are not something you are able to commit to, there is still opportunity to step in to help occasionally.

“We also have folks that serve as subs,” Molnar said.  “So if a regular driver goes on vacation, a substitute driver would step in and deliver for them while they are gone.”

According to Molnar, volunteers make up the majority of the Meals on Wheels staff and the organization really could not function without volunteer help.

Volunteer drivers will need to use their own vehicles to make deliveries and have a valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance.

If you would like to volunteer or for more information call MAMOW at 304-599-1954, visit the website morgantownwvmow.org, or email morgantownareamow@gmail.com

“Our mission is to feed some of the most vulnerable people in Mon County,” Molnar said.  “Our clients are senior citizens and/or disabled.  These are folks who are able to stay in their home longer in many cases because they are getting a hot meal five times a week.”
