Preston voting precincts finalized

KINGWOOD — Some Preston County voters will cast ballots at new polling places in the upcoming May 10 primary elections.

That’s because Preston County commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to finalize the proposed changes.

“I think it’s good,” Commissioner Dave Price told County Clerk Linda Huggins “I think the solutions you came up with … for the precincts, for places of convenience for people  to come vote, and I think it’s just good. Appreciate it.”

Huggins said she had the help of a good office staff.

“Everybody’s pulling their weight and everybody else’s weight to try and get all this done,” she said.

Huggins went over the new voting locations.

Precinct 17, in Albright, will vote at the Albright Fellowship Center; precincts 18 and 20 will vote at East Preston Middle School; the newly created precinct 28 will head to the Terra Alta Volunteer Fire Department.

The changes were required as a result of the new state delegate districts – which essentially cuts Preston County into a north and south half.

It’s been a long time since such extreme changes were made, Huggins said. A lot of people were affected and she is in the process of mailing voters cards explaining the changes.

Commission President Samantha Stone asked if Huggins thought there was a chance the deadline to run for office – noon on Jan. 29 – could be extended given that other steps in the process had been extended.

Absolutely not, Huggins said.

“They’re residence is what makes a difference whether we changed that district or not, they’re residence and it is what it is,” She said. “That’s what I need to go by.”

Price said it’s not like this was an overnight process – it’s been in the works for a couple of months.

If anyone has any questions about which precinct they are in, the best thing to do is to contact the county clerk’s office, Huggins said.
