Motorcyclists suffer injuries in DUI accident

Two people suffered serious injuries after an accident involving their motorcycle and an SUV driven by a Granville man.

Scott A. Burns, 44, of Granville, was driving along River Road late Saturday night when his Hyundai Tucson crossed the center line and struck an oncoming motorcycle, according to a criminal complaint.

Monongalia County Deputy Sheriff Scott Watkins, who filed the complaint, wrote that when he arrived at the scene of the accident, emergency medical personnel were loading one individual into an ambulance and attending to a second person who was located next to a damaged motorcycle approximately 6 feet off of the road.

Watkins also noted in the complaint that the silver SUV driven by Burns had severe front end damage.

Witnesses to the accident remained on the scene and told deputies that the SUV was driving behind them when it crossed the yellow lines into the oncoming lane and struck the motorcycle, the complaint said.

Burns told deputies he was adjusting the radio in his vehicle when he veered into the oncoming lane, striking the motorcycle head-on.  In the complaint, Watkins said that a field sobriety test was conducted on Burns and he failed.

Burns admitted to deputies that he had smoked marijuana and took prescription antidepressants prior to driving his vehicle, the complaint said.

Burns was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence with serious bodily injury due to the serious nature of the injuries sustained by the two victims on the motorcycle, according to the complaint.

Burns’ bond was set at $50,000.  He will appear before a judge for a preliminary hearing on Nov. 30.

Information on the injuries of the two on the motorcycle was not available in time for this report.
