Morgantown girls’ volleyball team set to begin state tournament

CHARLESTON — After earning a record of 30-9-1 this season, the Morgantown High girls’ volleyball team will travel to the state capital with a shot at the state title waiting for it.

Getting this far is something the Mohigans had to really work hard for, and head coach Erica Manor credits the team’s veteran experience as one reason for its success.

“We had high expectations for the season with a solid group of seniors and veteran players … they’ve worked hard on and off the court and have helped build a culture for the program.” Manor said.

Morgantown will see a familiar face Friday in Parkersburg at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center. The Mohigans have defeated PHS twice previously this season, only losing one set out of 5. Despite the success against them early on, MHS will have to play the game like it’s its first time seeing the other team.

With the attack of Parkersburg being a strength, coach Manor’s team will try to focus on their defense and be patient.

“They have a good right side hitter and setter that can move the ball. We need to focus on our side of the net,” Manor said.

Defense is a strength for the Mohigans and they will look to sophomore Isabel Grushecky and senior Grace Washburn. Combined, the two in the middle have earned 195 total blocks of their team total of 272.

Morgantown is entering the game at full strength with everyone on their team healthy and ready to try and make a run at the state title. Morgantown and Parkersburg are set for first serve 30 minutes after the 1:30 p.m. Class AAA quarterfinal begins.

If MHS wins, it will play later Friday night in the semifinals, with the championship set for Saturday.
