Morgantown officers ‘Beard It Up’ for cancer

MORGANTOWN — Officers from the Morgantown Police Department will look a little different this month as they help raise money for cancer.

The department will participate in the Beard it Up/Color for the Cure campaign, which shows support and raises funds for The Cure Starts Now, a pediatric cancer research effort. During the month of November, 16 officers, both male and female, will raise awareness and show their support by growing their beards, coloring their hair or painting their nails, according to Andrew Stacy, City of Morgantown communications director.

“The campaign allows officers to disregard our grooming standards for a month and helps us raise funds for a very worthy cause.  Many of our officers are parents so it hits close to home,” said Morgantown Chief of Police Eric Powell.

Every Thursday, the department will post a weekly reminder about the campaign on its Facebook and Twitter accounts. It will also highlight different officers and how they are showing their support — whether that means growing a beard or coloring their hair or nails, Stacy said.

The community can access these updates by visiting the Morgantown Police Department Facebook page or its Twitter feed @Morgantown_PD, Stacy said.  Those wanting to keep track of the weekly updates should like and follow the pages to receive updates on their personal news feeds.

According to Stacy, last year’s campaign raised around $2,500 and they are hoping to surpass that amount this year.

“It’s a great cause and a great way for the public to get a head start on Giving Tuesday, which is Nov. 30,” said Stacy.  Giving Tuesday is celebrated every year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to encourage acts of generosity during the holidays and every Tuesday throughout the year.
