James Downs

James Albright “Jim” Downs Jr. 72, of Morgantown, passed away on Sept. 11. He transitioned peacefully at his Cheatwood home surrounded by family and friends after a short bout with cancer (his second).

Jim was born in Dayton, Ohio, to Lt. Col James Albright Downs and June Kaufmann Downs on March 7, 1949. He spent his early childhood moving around the world with family in support of his father’s military service. The family settled back in West Virginia, their ancestral home, in 1959, where they acquired a home in South Park on Linden Street. Jim was quickly well known throughout the neighborhood, where he delivered newspapers and shoveled driveways to earn money. Most notably, he would form friendships that would last his entire life.

In 1967 Jim graduated from Morgantown High School where he was an accomplished athlete in three sports, contributing to multiple championship teams. He went on to a distinguished 30-plus year career as a pipefitter with UA Local 152.

Jim was a proud 10th generation West Virginian and a testament to the character of the state. He enjoyed history, outdoors, reading, family and friends. He was generous and kind, always quick to help those in need with a dollar or hard work. Jim was the life of any party and will be mourned by those fortunate enough to have known him.

Jim is survived by his children, Mark and Lisa, Michael and Emma and Jamie; his grandchildren Matthew, Anna, Adeline, Chloe, Finn and Graham; and siblings, Susan, Peggy, Nancy and Tommy. Jim was a favorite uncle to several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jim and June; his sister, Katherine; and his niece, June.

Per Jim’s request, there will be no funeral services or visitation. Please remember him by your actions. There will a celebration of his life at Coopers Rock Pavilion 2, from 3-7 p.m. on Oct. 15.

Forever, Jimmy Downs. Jimmy Downs.
