Two Virginia men accused of transporting meth

AURORA — Two Virginia men are accused of bringing about a half pound of methamphetamine into Preston County.

David Conneway and Walter Long Jr. are each charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, transportation of a controlled substance into state and conspiracy by the West Virginia State Police.

Troopers S.W. Morris and T.P. Nicholson were patrolling U.S. 50 in Aurora when they spotted a green BMW sedan traveling east at “a high rate of speed,” according to a criminal complaint. Troopers watched the sedan turn into a driveway.

Both men exited the vehicle as troopers approached, the troopers engaged the two and detained them for “officer safety,” the complaint states.

Long said he owned the vehicle. The registration was run and Preston E911 said it came back to a 2012 Dodge, according to the complaint. Troopers said the BMW was going to be towed because of the improper registration and no insurance. The two told the troopers there was a loaded Taurus Pistol and a disassembled rifle in the vehicle.

Morris told the two the troopers would give them a ride to a local gas station where they could wait for a ride and asked the men what items they wanted to bring with them, the complaint states.

One of the items requested was a black backpack in the backseat. It was searched for “officer safety” and a clear plastic container, with a “crystal like substance believed to be methamphetamine” was found.

The car was searched and a sandwich bag with a crystal-like substance was found on the floorboard behind the driver’s seat, according to the complaint. The substances field tested positive for meth.

The complaint states the meth later weighed in at 267.2 grams — or a little over half a pound.

Both men are being held in Tygart Valley Regional Jail in lieu of $75,000 bond each.
