Council discusses E-cycling and trash

KINGWOOD — E-cycling and trash were the main topics of discussion at the Wednesday evening meeting of the Preston County Solid Waste Authority.

Don Smith, who represents the Preston County Commission on the board, said the Aug. 18 e-cycling event collected 21,331 pounds (17.1 tons) of recyclables. He said 7.1 tons were from CRTs.

Smith said a few of the other recyclables included 3,199 pounds of computers, 681 pounds of printers and 3,387 pounds of flat screen TVs.

“The weight was up from last year,” he said. “We had 270 vehicles drop off recyclables.”

Smith said the event “went really well.” He said some of the improvements the board will consider for next year will include do-not-enter signs, exit signs, cones, T-shirts for helpers and a CRTs-only sign.

Smith told board members next year’s grant request will be for $14,785 and will include funds for educational materials.

In other business, Terra Alta Mayor James Tasker asked the board if it could help with funds to cover the $1,400 cost to repair a garage door. Smith asked him to bring the invoice to the next meeting and the board would “see what they could do.”

Tasker said the scales used in Terra Alta’s recycling program have been fixed. He said the repairs came to more than the $884 it was believed it would cost. He said the bill came to $952.50 and covered parts and labor. Board members voted to cover the cost of the repairs at their August meeting.

Jay Sowers, Preston County litter officer, reported he wrote a total of 17 tickets in August. The tickets were written for trash and litter on property.

“The biggest complaints I receive are for high grass, junk and junk cars,” he said. “Homes depreciate because of this.”

Sowers said the county does not have a high grass ordinance. He said he wants to contact other counties and find out how they deal with this problem and address the commission about a possible ordinance.

Sowers also addressed old tires.

“We’re supposed to get a tire amnesty or two shortly,” Sowers said. “I’m shooting for September, and am looking for a place to hold it. I’d like to have it around the 15th or 20th. Kingwood is out due to the Buckwheat Festival.”

The next meeting of the Preston County Solid Waste Authority is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 7.
