Clay-Battelle shuts out Federal Hocking 48-0 in complete performance

BLACKSVILLE — Clay-Battelle scored touchdowns on its first seven possessions and Carson Shriver accounted for four of them, as the Cee-Bees ran past Federal Hocking (Ohio) Friday, 48-0.

The Lancers were out-manned, literally, beginning the game with just 12 healthy players. After two went down with injuries, Federal Hocking played most of the second half with just 10 players on the field.

“Honestly, I’m just glad we got to play a football game,” C-B head coach Ryan Wilson said. “With everything we went through last year with COVID, I’m glad this bunch of kids were able to get out on the field and play.”

The Cee-Bees were hit hard by COVID-19 regulations last season, playing just five games.

They quickly made up for lost time.

Shriver scored on a 42-yard run on just the second play from scrimmage, and of the 33 plays Clay-Battelle ran, eight of them went for 17 yards or more.

Shriver added two more scoring runs in the second quarter to give C-B a 35-0 halftime lead and then completed a 51-yard TD pass to Noah Sollars in the third quarter.

Teammate Drew Boczek threw a 46-yard TD pass to Sollars and he completed his only two passes of the game for 72 yards. Boczek also had two receptions for 40 yards.

“Offensively, things went pretty well,” Wilson said. “I have to give a lot of credit to our offensive line. We were missing two starters there and plugged in two new kids who did a pretty good job.

“With Carson and Drew, we certainly have some tools in the tool box. We saw that in the summer at the seven-on-sevens, so we may be able to do some different things with them down the road.”

Brady Ammons added 79 yards rushing on just five attempts and scored on a 40-yard run and Maverick Gum finished off the scoring with a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter and had 88 yards rushing on 11 carries.

Sollars had two catches for 97 yards and two scores and Shriver added 91 yards passing and 26 yards receiving to go with his 76 yards rushing.

In all, Clay-Battelle (1-0) had 401 yards of offense and averaged 12.2 yards per play.

The Cee-Bees defense pitched a shutout and held Federal Hocking (0-2) to just 85 yards of offense.

“Defensively, we were lights out at times and at other times we missed something,” Wilson said. “They got a shutout, so there shouldn’t be too much to complain about.”

The Cee-Bees will host East Hardy at 7 p.m. Friday in the second week of the season. East Hardy will be coming off a 41-20 victory against Gilmer County.
